Graham Greene

Author

Graham Greene

Graham Greene was an English novelist and author, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. Combining literary acclaim with widespread popularity, Greene had acquired a reputation early in his own lifetime as a great writer, both of serious Catholic novels and of thrillers (or "entertainments " as he termed them). Through 67 years of writings which included over 25 novels, he explored the ambivalent moral and political issues of the modern world through a Catholic perspective.

International bestselling author

'The most ingenious, inventive and exciting of our novelists, rich in exactly etched and moving portraits of real human beings.'
The Times

The Heart of the Matter is considered one of the best English language novels of the twentieth century.

Scobie, a police officer serving in a wartime West African state, is distrusted, being scrupulously honest and immune to bribery. But then he falls in love, and in doing so he is forced to betray everything he believes in, with drastic and tragic consequences.

'Greene was a master of characterisation and this book is no exception.'
The Independent on Sunday

'In a class by himself – the ultimate chronicler of twentieth-century man's consciousness and anxiety.'
The Independent

'A superb storyteller with a gift for provoking controversy.'
The New York Times
