This extraordinary companion to The Goldfish Boy is a riveting mystery with a sensitive story about mental health at its core.

An old, abandoned house hides a secret within its walls … When Melody Bird meets the mysterious Hal, he tells her he’s an undercover spy, keeping tabs on a gang of jewel thieves. But can a young boy really be in charge of such a dangerous mission? Melody is determined to decode the strange riddles hidden in the graveyard, but Matthew and Jake wonder whether Hal is the true puzzle to be solved …?

'Thompson strikes the perfect balance, seemingly without compromise, between an issue-driven novel and one with broad, commercial appeal. This empathetic debut is a middle-grade whodunit with a very special heart.'
Kirkus Reviews

'A multilayered mystery at once suspenseful and heartrending.'
Booklist

'The novel successfully weaves Matthew's personal struggle with obsessive-compulsive disorder and the search for the missing toddler into a compelling story with a hearty dose of mystery and adventure.'
School Library Journal
