Nicola Pierce

Nicola Pierce published her first book for children, Spirit of the Titanic, to rave reviews and five printings within its first twelve months. City of Fate, her second book, transported the reader deep into the Russian city of Stalingrad during World War II. The novel was shortlisted for the Warwickshire School Library Service Award, 2014. Nicola went on to bring 17th century Ireland vividly to life in Behind the Walls (2015), a rich emotional novel set in the besieged city of Derry in 1689, followed by Kings of the Boyne (2016), a moving and gritty account capturing the Battle of the Boyne (1690), which was shortlisted for the Library Association of Ireland (LAI) awards. In 2018 Nicola delved in to the true stories of the passengers, crew and the legacy of the fated ship Titanic, in her illustrated book of the same name.

Debut novel

The ghost of 15-year-old Samuel Scott moves restlessly aboard the Titanic as she sails to her doom in 1912. An eyewitness to the final days in the lives of rich and poor, crew and passengers, this is Samuel’s story.

That calm, sunny day is one I’ll always remember ... because the twentieth of April, in the year 1910, was the day I, Samuel Joseph Scott, died.’ Fifteen-year-old Sam plunges to his death whilst building his beloved Titanic. Now as the greatest ship the world has ever seen crosses the Atlantic Ocean, Sam finds himself on board – as a ghost. His spirit roams the ship, from the glamour of first class to the party atmosphere of third class. Sam shares the excitement of Jim, Isobel and their children - on their way to a new life in America. Disaster strikes when Titanic hits an iceberg. As Titanic sinks to her icy grave, Jim and his family are trapped behind locked gates ...

'A ghost story with a twist.'
Sunday Independent

'Little did I know that this book would be gripping, exciting and unimaginably shattering. Towards the end, things picked up a lot, and I realised that this would just get better and better and better.'
Guardian’s Children’s Books

'Captivating.'
New Ross Standard

'New and beautiful children’s novel ... The children were fascinated, I never saw so many children so engaged with an author ... the children were captivated by the book’s content and Nicola’s delivery.'
Nationalist & Munster Advertiser
