Shortlisted Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book of the Year / Younger Readers 2006

A mystery, an adventure story, and an ultimately hopeful book about a child dealing with his father's schizophrenia.

Pete's dad is being pursued by a secret organisation. Both their lives are in danger and when the helicopters hover nearby they must hide. Pete knows he leads an unusual life, but he's never dared ask questions before. Now he needs some answers. His dad's behaviour is starting to confuse him. But when Pete starts to piece the scraps of information together, what will he discover? Who, exactly, are they running from? And why is his father really behaving so strangely?

"What a refreshing surprise it is to listen to a story in which good things happen to good people. In Australia, 12-year-old Pete and his father have been on the run from a secret organization for several years when events end that life. Luckily, people along the way have protected and looked after them. Stig Wemyss narrates with ease, and the plot emerges with appropriate tension. Wemyss reads fluidly and distinctly, transitioning between characters seamlessly. He engagingly captures adolescence in general and the character Pete specifically. Since the story is peppered with Australian slang, an atlas and a dictionary of slang would be enjoyable accompaniments but are not necessary."
