A gripping thriller by Barry Maitland about fraud, forgery and murder, set in the high-stakes world of fine art.

When the Russian wife of the owner of one of the most valuable private collections of modern art in the UK is found dead, Detective Chief Inspector David Brock is drawn into the world of art forgery and fraud. From the dealers and galleries of London’s West End, his investigations take him to Hanover, Miami and New York. Meanwhile, his old colleague DCI Kathy Kolla, who now leads one of the Metropolitan Police Murder Investigation teams, finds herself at the wrong end of a corruption charge. With her whole career in the balance, she will do almost anything to clear her name.

'Barry Maitland is one of Australia's finest crime writers.'
The Sunday Tasmanian

'Maitland stacks his characters in interesting piles, and lets his mystery burn busily and bright.'
Courier Mail

'No one drops so many wonderful threads to a story or ties them so satisfyingly together at the end.'
The Australian

'Emily Joyce's smooth, witty, and beautifully calibrated performance makes this Rube Goldberg machine of a plot even more fun than it deserves to be. Inspector David Brock finds himself on the Art Fraud desk, investigating the apparent suicide of a beautiful Russian woman whose British husband owns a famous art collection. Meanwhile, Brock's old partner, Kathy Kolla, is on the run, having been charged (unfairly!) with corruption. These threads are more double helix than related plot lines, and both are pretty baroque, but the art fraud and forgery background of Brock's case is interesting, and Joyce performs with such lively sympathy that you easily forgive the more implausible bits. Her remarkable ease with British, American, German, and Russian accents adds a great deal to the entertainment.'
