Pat Malcolm grew up around the wheatbelt town of Bruce Rock and left school when she was 14. Since then she has worked in the north-west of Western Australia in hotels and on fishing boats, as a prospector, as a nurse and as a cook on stations and mining camps. She lives in Broome and is the mother of seven children.
